Kerry's Central Issues
A plan to secure nuclear materials that could get into the hands of terrorists, and an effective nuclear policy toward North Korea and Iran, are the most important national security challenges we face. John Kerry has a plan that deals with these critical security issues. President Bush chose to invade Iraq instead of dealing with the more imminent threats of North Korea, as well as the availability of nuclear material. We need a President that understands what the biggest threats are, and one that has an aggressive plan to deal with them. Our current foreign policy isn’t bringing us any closer to preventing a nuclear crisis. Something needs to be done while we have a chance. It’s only a matter of time that a terror group, or a nation hostile towards the United States uses these weapons against us or our allies. George Bush doesn’t seem to have the sense of urgency that a U.S. President should have in dealing with this growing threat. I believe that John Kerry is better suited to take action now, before the problem grows to an overwhelming level. Kerry considers arms control and non-proliferation a central issue. He has pledged to give “the most determined, all-out effort ever initiated to secure the world’s nuclear materials and weapons of mass destruction”… which is a far cry from anything Bush has done. I understand that these are words from a guy who wants to be president, but it also reveals Kerry’s understanding of the magnitude to the problems we may encounter in the future if we don’t act.
